Not be Confused with Sequel

Five Nights at Freddy's is a supernatural horror film based on the Five Nights at Freddy's (FNaF) franchise created by Scott Cawthon. According to an interview with Scott, the movie adapts the characters and setup found in the first Five Nights at Freddy's video game. It was originally planned to be based off of the book The Silver Eyes, and while the script had since changed, some aspects of this story were kept. The movie officially released on October 26th, 2023, however it started playing in some areas on October 25th.

A Five Nights at Freddy's theatrical film was first announced in 2015 with the release of Five Nights at Freddy's 3[2], but was caught in a state of development hell as it passed through several directors and studios, such as Gil Kenan and Chris Columbus. Scott Cawthon also revealed on Reddit that multiple screenplays were written and scrapped, before finally confirming the "Mike" screenplay had been greenlit on November 21, 2020.[3]

Filming began on February 1, 2023, with Emma Tammi directing, and Jim Henson's Creature Shop building the film's animatronic cast. The production title of the film is "Bad Cupcake".

Plot synopsis

Warning: The following information contains spoilers for the Five Nights at Freddy's movie. Show at your own risk.

From producer Jason Blum and based on the acclaimed video game series of the same name. In this supernatural horror film, Mike Schmidt (Hutcherson) is a troubled security guard who starts a seemingly easy overnight gig at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, the local family entertainment center. Struggling to take care of his ten-year-old sister Abby (Rubio) on his own, the generally undependable Mike is low on options when he lands this new job to pay the bills, and brings her along to the gig. Mike quickly realizes, however, that the night shift at Freddy's won't be as kickback as he was thinking after he makes a disturbing discovery- that the pizza place's four horrifying animatronic mascots all apparently come alive, moving about on their own as they hunt down and attempt to kill anyone that is still at Freddy's after midnight.

Now, Mike and Abby must do everything they can to keep themselves alive through the night. But after local police officer Vanessa Monroe (Lail) arrives and quickly finds herself thrust into the middle of this terrifying situation, she is able to shed light on the dark history and inner workings of Fazbear Entertainment and its nefarious co-founder William Afton (Lillard)- A man who it turns out is a child murderer, with their ghosts now haunting the animatronic creatures. And now, Mike, Abby and Vanessa must find a way to all work together if they are to have any chance at surviving this increasingly terrifying situation. With animatronic characters by Jim Henson's Creature Shop

The terrifying horror game phenomenon becomes a blood-chilling cinematic event, as Blumhouse— the producer of M3GAN, The Black Phone and The Invisible Man— brings Five Nights at Freddy’s to the big screen. The film follows Mike (Josh Hutcherson; Ultraman, The Hunger Games franchise) a troubled young man caring for his 10-year-old sister Abby (Piper Rubio; Holly & Ivy, Unstable), and haunted by the unsolved disappearance of his younger brother more than a decade before.

Recently fired and desperate for work so that he can keep custody of Abby, Mike agrees to take a position as a night security guard at an abandoned theme restaurant: Freddy Fazbear’s Pizzeria. But Mike soon discovers that nothing at Freddy’s is what it seems. With the aid of Vanessa, a local police officer (Elizabeth Lail; You, Mack & Rita), Mike’s nights at Freddy’s will lead him into unexplainable encounters with the supernatural and drag him into the black heart of an unspeakable nightmare.

The film also stars Mary Stuart Masterson (Blindspot, Fried Green Tomatoes), as Mike’s icy Aunt Jane; Kat Conner Sterling (We Have a Ghost, 9-1-1) as Abby’s caring babysitter, Max; and Matthew Lillard (Good Girls, Scream) as Steve Raglan, Mike’s smug career counselor.

Five Nights at Freddy’s is directed by Emma Tammi (The Wind, Blood Moon) and is written by Scott Cawthon, Emma Tammi and Seth Cuddeback. The film’s iconic animatronic characters will be created by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop.

Five Nights at Freddy’s is produced by Jason Blum and Scott Cawthon. The film’s executive producers are Bea Sequeira, Russell Binder, Marc Mostman and Christopher H. Warner. Universal Pictures presents a Blumhouse production, in association with Striker Entertainment.

The "Mike" screenplay Basic Setup: Hmmmm. This makes sense. Why didn't I think of this before? Problems: Actually this is a good mix... it has the best pieces from all the previous screenplays... Not really any problems here. All the right characters, all the right motivations, all the right stakes...

Verdict: Yeah, we're going with this one. It's fun, it's scary, and it has a great central story!

Cast

For viewing purposes, the characters have been sorted into four categories. Characters that originate from the games are shown first, with characters named in the movie appearing before those that aren't named at this time. This is followed by Movie-original characters with confirmed names, and then by those with role descriptions but no names. Next are characters that only have their actors revealed, and no other information stated. Finally are cut characters, who can't be seen in the final movie

Trivia

  • At one point during filming, Foxy's arm apparently caught on fire, due to his servos overheating.[1]
  • According to Markiplier, the YouTuber was planned to cameo in the movie, but had to decline due to scheduling conflicts.
  • The movie was advertised with a release date of October 27th, however it started playing on October 25th, instead.
    • The movie released on Peacock on October 26th, also before the originally intended date.
  • As shown by a security camera, the movie starts on April 6th, 2000, the day before Mike gets the job at Freddy's
    • The day and month are likely a reference to the day the movie was announced; April 7th, 2015.

Cut Content

  • A fixed version of Foxy was made, but goes unused in the final movie.
  • Hank was intended to be Carl's father.[6]
  • After Night 2, Mike was intended to be on his laptop, looking up the Missing Children's Incident after Vanessa mentioned it the previous night. The article he finds was named "A sad night at Freddy's," with an attached video of a news report talking about the incident.
  • Several scenes and lines for Max were cut, but later revealed.
    • Max originally had a line where she complimented Abby's drawings.[7]
    • In an earlier script of the movie, Max was supposed to die in a pool of blue paint, as opposed to being bitten in half by Freddy.[8]
    • Max also was intended to bring her dog, Bonesey[9], with her while breaking in.
      • Bonesey was also intended to appear at Mike's house while Max was babysitting.[10]
      • Bonesey can be seen in the truck right before they go inside, though he doesn't go in with them in the final movie.
    • Max was originally supposed to say "Are you in here, honey? It’s ok, I won’t hurt you" while following Ghost Kid #4. [11][6]
      • She was also intended to look through a pile of animatronics to find Ghost Kid #4 after following him.[11]
      • Ghost Kid #4 was also intended to be seen inside Freddy's belly before her death [6]
    • After Mike mentions that he intends on paying Max, instead of saying "It's okay, I know where you live", Max was originally supposed to say "Stop. It’s enough you get me away from that brother of mine." [12]
      • Additionally, after the "I know where you live" line, Max was intended to say "She’s a really good kid Mike, you know that?", referring to Abby.[13]
    • In the original script, Max was supposed to mention Abby staying in her room all night, chatting away with her imaginary friend, before mentioning that Abby was getting better at drawing.[10]
      • After she noticed the delinquency notice, she was going to suggest Mike get a dog like Bonesey, to scare away people trying to put up delinquency notices.
      • When she left, she was also going to remind Mike of the meeting with Aunt Jane at Dr. Lillian's office in the morning.
  • Garrett's ghost was originally supposed to appear in the pizzeria.[14]
    • According to Entom's insider, this was an alternative version of William Afton's appearance at the entrance.[15]
    • Based on the details provided, as well as scenes that made it into the final movie, Garrett might've been intended to possess Spring Bonnie, as the details line up with Freddy and Foxy's ghost kid scenes.
  • Mike's mother was originally specified to have commit suicide after his father left, though this was reportedly removed to maintain the PG-13 rating.[16]
    • Notably, with Mike's final dialogue, the canon order appears to be reversed; Mike's mother died from unspecified reasons, and it's implied that that's why his father "couldn't handle it".
  • Aunt Jane was originally intended to be seen smoking on-screen. [17]
  • The opening cutscene was originally meant to show Bob being hit over the head with a chair by an unknown animatronic, rather than being chased by Foxy, before being dragged by said animatronic.[10]
    • Additionally, the camera was planned to show the guard's disembodied eyes falling to the ground at the end, after the Bear Mask kills him.
    • This would've cut straight to the title card, rather than showing the 8-bit MCI cutscene.
  • In the mall scene, Jeremiah originally said he would've kicked himself in the balls, rather than the ass.[10]
    • The mall scene also originally happened before the scene of Mike waking up.
  • In Steve Raglan's debut scene, he was originally more of a troll, rather than being confrontational and serious.[10]
    • The scene with Steve recognizing Mike's last name also wasn't in this version of the script.
  • In the dream sequence, Mike was originally going to be distracted by a yellow bird, instead of a yellow frisbee, which flew off after hearing Afton's car.[10]
  • When Mike talks with Dr. Lillian, he originally had an extra line about Aunt Jane. In the final, he mentions Jane only wanting Abby for the welfare check, but in the earlier draft, he was intended to say "I know this because it happened to me."[10]
  • During Night 1's phone call, Steve had more lines.[10]
    • He originally mentioned that the security system dates back to when Ronald Reagan was president.
    • He joked around about dying in an electrical fire.
    • Instead of the "See you on the flipside" line, he would've said "You and Freddy's should be a match made in heaven."
  • In the R-Rated draft, Kim, who was unnamed, originally had a line about state-of-the-art animatronics and puppetry, which was removed. [10]
  • When Mike picks up his flashlight, Balloon Boy's jumpscare originally wasn't there.[10]
  • When Jeff brings up killing Mike in Sparky's Diner, he originally mentioned that he knew a guy who could do it.[10]
  • When Mike resets the power after the dream sequence on night 2, instead of Foxy being in the hallway, it was originally the ghost of Garrett.[10]
    • Mike was also meant to catch a glimpse of Garrett, who immediately ran away.
  • Instead of saying that she went to Freddy's as a kid, Vanessa originally lied and said she worked at Freddy's, and helped design Mike's security vest.[10]
  • The break-in segment of the R-Rated draft has several differences.[10]
    • Jeff briefing the gang on their plan was longer.
    • Carl was originally going to bring a police baton, and be established as Hank's son.
    • Bonesey was in the truck, barking. He can still be seen in the final cut.
    • Instead of knocking stuff over, Carl was originally supposed to spray ketchup and mustard all over the walls, until he's hit on the back of the head by ketchup. He turned around, which revealed that Chica was the one who did it.
      • He also originally heard the giggling of a little girl coming from inside Chica, and didn't have time to react to the Cupcake launching at his face, as it does in the final film.
    • Hank was originally planned to die by having Bonnie stab his guitar through the back of his neck, in an attempt to avenge Carl.[6]
    • Jeff's death was originally shown, with Foxy slicing his hook through his face
  • The river scene originally had Mike give a lot more context.
    • After Garrett died, his mother was stated to cope by have another child, but after having a girl, rather than a boy to fill the void of Garrett, she spiraled into insanity. This resulted in Mike's dad leaving, and a week after, his mom killed herself.
  • In the R-Rated draft, the fort scene was originally longer, with Bonnie giving Abby a piggy-back ride.[10]
  • Ella's stomach hatch was originally closed, with no explanation of Springlocks.[10]
  • Night 5 had the most differences in the R-Rated film.
    • The final dream sequence on night 5 with Mike and his family originally played much different.[10]
      • The dream originally started off the same as the other dream sequences.
      • Instead of seeing Garrett getting kidnapped, like previous dreams, he would've turned and seen his mother tickling Garrett, who reminds him that she told him to watch Garrett. Mike then punches the table, saying he's sorry. Garrett talks in a tone that's off, asking to play with Mike, and saying he's been gone for so long.
      • Mike realizes the dream is wrong, and when he looks back at his family, their faces are distorted, looking more evil, and says they're not real. The blonde boy's voice comes from behind him, saying the same line he says in the final, but unlike the other dreams, he's alone.
      • Mike doesn't buy GK1's offer, who then mentions that the truth won't bring Garrett back. He points at Mike's family, who are now gone. Time freezes, and when Mike looks back at GK1, the other four ghosts come out of the forest.
      • GK1 claims that if he gives Abby to him, Garrett would be at peace. Mike accepts, but asks again who took Garrett. GK1 points at the yellow rabbit drawing, before walking away.
    • After the dream, instead of backing into multiple costumes, Mike only backed up into one. The costume opened up, and Max's body came out. He looks up, seeing Jeff, Carl, and Hank's bodies were stuffed into the same costume.
    • At the house, Aunt Jane would've been seen smoking and drinking alcohol, the living room filled with smoke. The glowing blue eye of Golden Freddy lit up, shining through the smoke. It then cut to Abby coming out of her room. Golden Freddy was not withered in this version.
    • Ghost Kid #1 was visibly shown separating from Golden Freddy, whereas in the final, this happens off-screen.
    • When Jane's body is shown, a puddle of blood was shown staining the carpet.
    • The reveal of Vanessa being an Afton originally didn't mention Afton by name, and the photograph showed Vanessa and the four animatronics standing outside of the location for the grand opening.
    • Mike would've asked Vanessa how many children Afton killed, and if Garrett's body was stuffed into an animatronic, Vanessa's response to the former being "I don't know", while the latter was a no, saying Garrett was 'before'.
    • When Chica was trying to stuff Abby into Ella, instead of Ella being a Springlock suit, her chest cavity was meant to open up, with a small claw-like mechanism trying to grab her. This closely resembles Elizabeth's death to Circus Baby in the games.
    • In the scene of Ghost Kid #2 backing up, the script originally described the ghost as "a little girl." This is likely an error.
    • Vanessa was originally the one to tell Abby about the drawings, and told Abby what the yellow rabbit did to her friends.
    • Mike would've then called out to Abby, but stopped when he heard Garrett's voice say his name. He notices Garrett in the archway, and walks closer to him in disbelief, asking if it really is him. Garrett doesn't respond, and steps back into the archway, followed by Spring Bonnie stepping out.[15]
      • Spring Bonnie is also described with whiskers, and has blood covering him.
    • Afton originally didn't say anything when walking toward Mike, instead silently waving his knife around. It's also described that "Afton's evilness is powerful enough to telepathically communicate with the building," which triggers a laser lightshow from waving his knife. When he goes to stab Mike, Vanessa interrupts him, like in the final.
    • Afton's line was different, stating that he was one of them, like in the novels. Vanessa also shot him four times, rather than once, but she misses all her shots, being embraced and stabbed.
    • Abby replaces the drawing right after Afton stabbed Vanessa. Unlike in the final film, the drawing also includes Ghost Kid #1.
    • Afton's death was a lot different. Foxy slashed him, and Bonnie hit him in the knee with his guitar, before Freddy pried open the Spring Bonnie mask, allowing Chica to drop the cupcake inside his suit. Instead of the springlocks going off, the cupcake chewed through his flesh. The building responded to his pain.
    • A brief scene with Mike talking to Garrett in his consciousness plays in the forest, where Garrett, sitting across from Mike, tells Mike that it's time to go. Garrett says he forgives Mike, before Mike wakes up, with Abby urging him to go. Like in the final, they retrieves Vanessa's body, and leave. A ghostly wall of smoke is described to be coming toward them as they leave.
  • The final scenes, which are stated to be three weeks later, were also different.[10]
    • Lillian asks Mike if he's heard back from Jane yet, to which he says no.
    • Before cutting to the pizzeria's final scene, Mike would've stubbed his toe on something in the kitchen, observing the object in confusion. Abby asks what it was, and Mike puts the object down, revealing it to be the Security Badge, dented, with a smear of blood on it.
    • In the final scene, where Ghost Kid #1 closes the door on Afton, Afton originally didn't reach out. After the door was closed, it cuts to Afton, where the springlocks finally go off, and it cuts to black as Afton's screams are heard.
  • The post-credits scene originally teased the second movie.[10]
